MAST Indicator: A Smarter Way to Catch Market Trends
Ever found yourself stuck between moving averages and trend indicators, unsure of which signal to trust?
That’s exactly what inspired the creation of MAST — a multi-timeframe, visually-driven trend detection tool that simplifies your decision-making without compromising on technical depth.
Whether you're a swing trader or an intraday scalper, MAST helps you stay aligned with the dominant market trend across timeframes.
Disclaimer: This version of the MAST indicator is inspired by the original MAST concept developed by Definedge.
I’ve made additional modifications and enhancements to better suit my personal trading style and use cases.
Full credit and respect to Definedge for the foundational idea that sparked this version.
What Is the MAST Indicator?
MAST (Moving Average + Supertrend Trend Identifier) is a custom TradingView indicator that:
-
Plots a Simple Moving Average (SMA) and a Supertrend from a higher timeframe
-
Uses dynamic colors to highlight bullish/bearish momentum
-
Fills the space between SMA and Supertrend to show trend bias at a glance
It’s like seeing market structure through a heat map — green means go, red means caution.
How It Works: Under the Hood
Here’s what makes this version of MAST unique:
1. Multi-Timeframe Awareness
-
Instead of just relying on your current chart’s timeframe, MAST pulls SMA and Supertrend values from a higher timeframe
-
This helps you align your trades with the bigger picture, reducing false signals
2. Core Components
-
SMA: Helps identify broader price direction
-
Supertrend: Reacts faster to price movement, useful for entries and exits
Both are plotted independently, but interpreted together.
3. Color-Coded Signals
-
Green SMA or Supertrend line: Price is above → bullish
-
Red SMA or Supertrend line: Price is below → bearish
4. Trend Fill (Visual Bias Layer)
MAST fills the gap between SMA and Supertrend to visualize trend bias:
-
✅ Above Both = Strong Bullish
-
❌ Below Both = Strong Bearish
-
⚠️ Between = Caution zone (with upward or downward tilt based on price relation)
Why Use MAST?
π Clearer Trend Confirmation
No more confusion between conflicting indicators. When both Supertrend and SMA say green — that’s your trend.
π Better Risk Management
Avoid counter-trend trades during strong momentum phases. MAST keeps you on the right side of the move.
⏰ Works Across Timeframes
Use it on your 5-min scalping chart with a 1-hour trend filter or on your daily chart with a weekly filter. Totally flexible.
How to Use It
-
Load MAST on any chart
π View on TradingView -
Set your higher timeframe
-
Default is current timeframe
-
Use 1H on 15-min chart, or Daily on 1H for better context
-
-
Interpret the Fill:
-
Green fill = trend up
-
Red fill = trend down
-
Mixed fill = stay alert, trend unclear
-
Pro Tip: Pair MAST with Price Action
MAST isn’t a replacement for price action — it enhances it.
Use it with basic support/resistance, candlestick structure, or VWAP to get even more clarity. It works best when you combine trend context with price behavior.

It gives you the trend context you need — fast, clean, and with zero clutter.
And while the inspiration comes from Definedge’s original MAST, this adaptation takes it a step further with enhanced flexibility and visual clarity — built by a trader, for traders.
